La Via del T'ai Chi
and Tai Chi Chuan
by Flavio Toniolo
When I was looking for a proper name for the association which was about to be born, I thought at first of a name that would somehow recall Taoism, something natural, flowing, soft …
The Ying/Yang principles fascinated me a lot as they still do today.
Realizing that the Ying and Yang principles can regulate our health at any level as well as improve our way of relating to other people led me to T'ai Chi. I was draw to T'ai Chi, not simply in the sense of an abbreviated word for T'ai Chi Chuan, but as T'ai Chi or Tao, the highest balance of both these elements.
Practising T'ai Chi Chuan (a martial art based on the alternating of Ying and Yang) is becoming a very important process. More and more, people need to practise T'ai Chi Chuan also because of its double benefit of maintaining and improving our physical and mental well-being.
It is my intent that both this site and my book (unfortunately available in Italian only) will illustrate some of the Taoist practises I consider to be significant in order to reach a better knowledge of the Ying and Yang principles. They will undoubtedly be useful to achieve a better balance of mind and body as well.
Furthermore, it is my aim that both the school and my way of practising and living Taji Quan be presented in a way that I consider to be sufficient to understand the basics of Taiji Quan and "La Via del T'ai Chi".
Flavio Toniolo
YANG STYLE TAIJI QUAN from A to Z
George Xu e Flavio Toniolo"La Via del T'ai Chi" teaches and develops Yang Style Taiji Quan, starting from standardised Taiji (forms or movement sequences born after 1956 as the result of a team of qualified masters' work) to traditional Taiji Quan. You start with the 24 Posture form. Then you move on to the 48 Posture sequence. The subsequent study of the double-edged sword form (a standardised form made up of 32 movements) concludes the study of standardised Yang style.
This practise, which is very useful for students, is needed to prepare them both physically (it improves fluidity in movement, eliminates tension, develops movement of the entire body) - the Yang element - and mentally (more visual memory, more peace of mind, more serenity in facing everyday life situations) – the Ying element. This results in greater physical and mental balance.
As you can see from our "Course Outline", in our school you can learn all that is related to Yang style Taiji Quan. You are not taught forms only, but also all of the martial applications of the single movement.
Thanks to the efficacy of the techniques, while learning the forms all of the postures and general movement rules are indeed strengthened in this stage. You perform Tui-Shou (Hands that push) and Ta-lu (large and circular shifts), all Chin-na techniques (articular levers), San-Shou (combat simulation), Qi Gong (accurate breathing exercises to increase Qi – internal energy) and meditation.
After learning the standardised forms, the program continues with the traditional Yang form (also named classic or long Yang form) as transmitted by Yang Chengfu. You keep on practising Tui-Shou in pairs (which always goes hand in hand with learning the forms, of course) and other various martial applications.
That helps you increase your contact perception, sensitivity, your listening ability and also that of your partner, who is not an opponent but rather a help to your study. Sometimes your study is continued in specific small groups, and other times you study individually with the master.

"La Via del T'ai Chi" is an Association entirely committed to divulging Yang style Taiji Quan in all of its aspects. Therefore, it is a school aimed at specific studies. The courses are run and led by Master Flavio Toniolo, a skilled expert of this art, who has the right knowledge of postures to solve a number of problems related to articulations and bad postures.
Flavio Toniolo has studied both individually and, for several years, with the major exponents of the Yang family with whom he is still in touch.
